Aslan Newsletter of January 1998

Just before Christmas I received an interesting phone call from Debbie, a long-time supporter of our ministry and an Aslan tutor for many years.  Someone in her church was not acquainted with our work and asked her exactly where we got the "strange" name of Aslan.  It is somewhat amusing to me that with well over 20 million copies of C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia having been sold in the United States alone, there are still those who do not know where the name "Aslan" came from!

First of all, "Aslan" is not an acronym.  It is a real word in the Persian (or Turkish) language which means lion.  There are a few people in the USA and Canada and a large number of people in the Middle-East who are named Aslan or Aslanian.  Second of all, Aslan is the central figure in Lewis' popular Narnia series which begins with The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe If you have not had the pleasure of reading these books, run to your computer and order them from Amazon.com. immediately!

What really bothers me about my conversation with Debbie is not that someone did not know the derivation of "Aslan."  It is that we are beginning our 24th year of ministry (only one year away from our quarter-century celebration), and so many people here in our own little corner of New Jersey still have no idea that Aslan Youth Ministries exists.

Just before Christmas I also received a note from one of the individuals I most admire in this world - Lieutenant Commander Chris Butler.  In his letter Chris wrote, "Living through the Aslan experience, God's love has filled my spirit, fortified my faith and has enabled me to survive today . . . after all these years . . . .  I stop this little busy world of mine to say thank you Craig and Aslan for making my life so much richer."

Thank you so much for your gifts and for your prayers.  One of our primary goals this year is to better get the word out about Aslan.  More people need to know about world changers like Chris.  Spread the word . . . Aslan is on the move!

Most sincerely,
