Dear Friend,

Dominique is on her way to college! And what an accomplishment it is for this wonderful young woman. Hers has not been the easiest of lives ~ growing up in a single-parent home with her grandmother, mother and sister. Part of what’s wonderful about this particular story is that Dominique’s mother and her uncle were themselves Aslan kids many years ago. For years Dominique’s grandmother also participated in our food distribution program, always making a point each and every week to thank Aslan for the important role we were playing in the life of her family.

I draw a lot of inspiration from Jesus’ insightful story about the “man who went forth one day to sow seeds.” But I do sometimes wonder if the “sower” ever became discouraged. I know I do! I’m sure you remember how some seeds fell on rock hard ground and never even had the chance to grow. Other seeds fell on shallow soil with rock underneath, and the plants grew quickly only to die quickly when the roots hit rock. Other seeds fell among thorn bushes that squeezed the life out of them. Finally, some seeds fell on rich soil that gave a great harvest. The work God has called us to at Aslan can be wildly inspiring at times and wildly depressing at other times. It’s impossible to predict the path that a particular Aslan child will take. We sometimes invest huge amounts of time in children ~ only to see all the progress they’ve made reduced to nothing. Then there are young people like Dominique, who inspire us to keep coming back day-after-day and year-after-year to the high calling that God has anchored in our hearts.

Dominique’s participation in Aslan has meant a lot to her over the years. She benefited so much through our Mentor/Tutorial Program that she became an outstanding student maintaining a solid B average through high school! As a member of our Right Choices Bible classes, she became interested in going with us to Haiti two summers ago. Like all the young people we’ve taken to Haiti, Dominique’s perspective on life was changed forever while she was there. Lynn Ann recently wrote these words in a letter of recommendation for Dominique.

I feel personally blessed to have had a part in Dominique’s life. It has truly been an inspiration to watch her grow and watch her come to care for others less fortunate than herself. Her service with our organization in a very desolate situation in Haiti was truly outstanding. She did more than perform what was asked of her. She reached out with a truly caring heart and was moved to do the best she could to make a difference in the lives of the children in her care. I believe Dominique is an outstanding young woman who is going to accomplish great things as she chooses her path in life.

A few days ago, we received this sweet note of thanks from Dominique and her mother, Carrie.

Dear Aslan Friends,

Thank you for your gifts of kindness that have been shared to lighten the burden on my family as I continue my education in college. This shows that it’s not the outcome that proves God is with you, but what happens along the way.

Thank you so very much for your support. If you haven’t made a recent gift to Aslan, now might be a good time as we are currently in serious need. Because you care, the world is being changed, day-by-day, through the work of Aslan Youth Ministries.

Sincerely in Christ,
Craig
